For millions of Ghanaians living in the US, sending goods home isn't just logistics — it's love. Whether you're packing a barrel before Christmas or sending a quick air freight package for a birthday, the right items make the biggest difference. Here's what Ghanaian-American families send most often, what's allowed, and how to pack it for safe arrival.
Most Popular Items Families Send to Ghana
Clothing and Fabric
American brand clothing is consistently one of the most-requested categories. Children's clothing is especially popular — sizes run larger than what's commonly available in Ghana, and the quality of US brands holds up well.
- Children's clothing — back-to-school bundles, seasonal items, school uniforms
- Adult clothing — jeans, sneakers, athletic wear, professional attire
- Fabric and kente — many families send fabric purchased in US African markets back to Ghana for tailoring
- Shoes — pack shoes with socks or small items stuffed inside to use every inch of space and prevent crushing
Tip: roll clothing tightly and pack it around fragile items to act as padding. You get more in the barrel and better protection for breakables.
Food and Dry Goods
Ocean freight only for food — no fresh produce, meat, or perishables of any kind. Stick to shelf-stable items that can survive a 21–30 day voyage.
- Canned goods — soups, beans, tomatoes, evaporated milk
- Cereals and dry snacks — oatmeal, granola bars, crackers
- Nutritional supplements — Ensure, Boost, Carnation Breakfast Essentials are frequently sent for elderly relatives or young children
- Beverages — ground coffee, tea bags, hot chocolate mixes, powdered drink mixes
- Condiments and sauces — sealed bottles of hot sauce, soy sauce, salad dressing
Pack food at the bottom of the barrel where it can bear weight. Keep liquids upright and seal around the lids with tape as an extra precaution.
Electronics and Appliances
Electronics from the US are in high demand in Ghana — and the price difference is significant enough that many families prioritize these items in every shipment.
- Smartphones and tablets — new or used, for family members who need an upgrade
- Laptops — especially for students and young professionals
- Small kitchen appliances — blenders, air fryers, electric kettles, toasters
- Fans and extension cords — US-plug extension cords and surge protectors are practical and frequently requested
- Headphones and accessories — compact, easy to pack, and always appreciated

Health and Personal Care
This category is especially important for families with elderly relatives or young children. Stick to over-the-counter products only — see the note on prescription medication below.
- Vitamins and supplements — multivitamins, vitamin D, calcium, fish oil
- OTC medications — pain relievers, allergy medication, cold and flu remedies (no prescriptions)
- Skincare products — lotions, sunscreen, shea butter, specialized hair care products
- Baby items — diapers, formula, baby wipes, teething toys
- First aid supplies — bandages, antiseptic, thermometers
Household Items
These tend to travel by barrel and are appreciated for setting up or refreshing a home.
- Bedding — pillowcases, fitted sheets, lightweight throws pack compactly and are frequently requested
- Towels and washcloths — roll them tightly; they make good padding around fragile items
- Kitchen utensils — measuring cups, can openers, peelers, spatulas
- Children's school supplies — notebooks, pens, colored pencils, backpacks
- Cookware — lightweight pots and pans can go by ocean freight if packed carefully
What NOT to Send
Some items cause customs problems, get confiscated, or simply won't survive the trip. Avoid these:
Fresh produce, meat, and perishables — nothing fresh can survive a 30-day ocean voyage, and fresh items are prohibited on air freight as well. No fruits, vegetables, cooked food, or raw meat.
Prescription medication — Ghana Customs restricts the import of prescription drugs. Even well-intentioned shipments of medication for a family member can be confiscated or cause your entire shipment to be held for inspection. If a family member needs specific medication, consult a physician in Ghana about local sourcing.
Liquids in barrels — sealed containers can leak and ruin everything around them. The exception is tightly sealed items at the bottom of a barrel, packed upright and taped.
Large quantities of the same item — two of the same phone, three identical pairs of shoes, or a dozen of the same supplement brand can trigger a commercial intent flag at customs. Customs agents look for patterns that suggest resale rather than personal use. Keep quantities personal.
Currency and valuables — do not include cash, jewelry, or documents of significant value in a barrel or box shipment. Use a secure courier service for those items.
For the complete list of prohibited and restricted goods, see the Prohibited Items guide.
Air vs. Ocean: Quick Decision Guide
The right choice depends on timing, size, and what you're sending.
| Situation | Use Air | Use Ocean |
|---|---|---|
| Birthday or graduation gift needed in 1–2 weeks | Yes | No |
| Full barrel of household goods and clothing | No | Yes |
| Single high-value item (laptop, phone) | Yes | Optional if packed well |
| Holiday shipment planned in advance | No | Yes — book early |
| Food, dry goods, appliances | No | Yes |
| Small package under 10 lbs | Yes | No (not cost-effective) |
Air freight arrives in 5–7 business days at Kotoka International Airport in Accra. It costs more per pound but is the right call for time-sensitive or high-value items.
Ocean freight takes 21–30 days from departure to arrival at Tema Port. It's significantly more affordable for large volumes — most families ship by the barrel at $80–$150 per barrel depending on contents.

How to Pack a Barrel Like a Pro
If you're sending a barrel, how you pack it determines how much fits and how safely it arrives.
- Heaviest items on the bottom — canned goods, shoes, small appliances
- Wrap fragile items individually — use clothing as padding around electronics and glass
- Fill every gap — empty space shifts in transit and adds to dimensional weight costs; stuff socks, underwear, and small items into every void
- Keep liquids sealed and upright — tape around the caps of any bottles as a secondary seal
- Seal the lid properly — use the original lid and wrap the seam with heavy-duty packing tape
- Label clearly — write your name, phone number, and your consignee's name and contact in permanent marker on the outside

Shipping Timeline: Plan Around Ghanaian Holidays
Ocean freight takes 3–4 weeks. If you miss the window, your Christmas package arrives in January. Plan ahead.
| Holiday | Date | Ship by (Ocean) | Ship by (Air) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Christmas | December 25 | Late November | December 18 |
| Easter | Variable (March/April) | 5 weeks before Easter Sunday | 1 week before |
| Homowo | September (Ga calendar) | Early August | 1 week before |
| Mother's Day (Ghana) | — | 5 weeks before | 1 week before |
| Graduation season | May–July | 6 weeks before needed date | 1–2 weeks before |
Book early for Christmas. The late November ocean cutoff fills up fast, and air freight prices spike in December. If you're on the fence about ocean vs. air for the holidays, ocean is almost always the better value — as long as you give yourself enough lead time.
