Ghana Customs Guide

Every shipment into Ghana goes through customs. Here is exactly what that means, what we handle on your behalf, and what to expect at each stage.

01

What is Customs Clearance?

Every shipment entering Ghana — whether by sea, air, or road — must be formally declared to and cleared by the Ghana Customs Authority (GCA). This process takes place at Tema Port for ocean and vehicle shipments, and at Kotoka International Airport for air freight.

Customs clearance involves filing a formal declaration of the goods in your shipment, paying applicable import duties and taxes, and obtaining GCA approval for release. Without clearance, your cargo cannot leave the port or airport. VoltaHaul handles this entire process on your behalf — you do not need to engage a separate customs broker or clearing agent.

02

How Ghana Customs Clearance Works

From the moment you book to the moment your consignee collects, here is the full clearance process — step by step. VoltaHaul manages every stage on your behalf.

1
Submit your shipment manifest to VoltaHaul
Provide a complete list of all items in your shipment with estimated values. VoltaHaul collects this at booking.
2
VoltaHaul prepares customs documentation
We prepare the Bill of Lading or Airway Bill, the customs declaration (Form M), and file your shipment details via GCNet — Ghana's electronic customs system.
3
Ghana Customs Authority reviews the declaration
GCA officers at Tema Port or Kotoka Airport assess the declared goods, verify HS code classifications, and determine applicable import duties and taxes.
4
Duties and taxes are assessed and paid
Import duties (which vary by item category) are calculated and paid. VoltaHaul's on-the-ground team handles this payment on your behalf.
5
GCA issues cargo release
Once duties are paid and the declaration is approved, the Ghana Customs Authority issues a release notice and your cargo is cleared for pickup.
6
Consignee collects cargo
Your recipient in Ghana collects the shipment at Tema Port or Kotoka Airport, or arranges local delivery through an approved agent.

04

Duties & Taxes

Ghana levies import duties based on the HS (Harmonized System) code classification of your goods. The rate varies by item category. Below are common estimates — actual rates are set by the Ghana Customs Authority and are subject to change.

Item CategoryTypical Duty Rate
Personal effects / used household goods0–5%
Electronics (phones, laptops, appliances)5–20%
New clothing and textiles20%
Vehicles — depending on age and type5–35%
ℹ️

These figures are estimates only. Actual rates are determined by the Ghana Customs Authority based on declared value, item classification, and applicable levy schedules, which may change without notice. We provide a customs estimate in your booking confirmation and update you if rates change before your cargo is cleared.

05

Tips to Avoid Delays

Most customs delays are avoidable. Follow these guidelines to keep your shipment moving smoothly through clearance.

✅
Declare all items accurately
Misdeclaration — listing items incorrectly or omitting high-value goods — is the most common cause of seizure and delays. Always provide an honest and complete manifest.
🧾
Keep receipts and invoices for high-value items
Ghana Customs may request proof of purchase for electronics, appliances, and other high-value items. Having receipts ready prevents holds and disputes over declared value.
🚫
Do not pack prohibited items
Any prohibited item found during inspection — even if unintentional — can cause your entire shipment to be held. Review our Prohibited Items page before packing.
📱
Respond promptly to our requests
Customs clearance sometimes requires additional documents from you. When we contact you for information, a fast response prevents days of unnecessary delays at the port.
