What Determines the Cost of Shipping to Ghana?
Service Type: Air vs. Ocean Freight
This is the biggest pricing lever. Air freight gets your shipment to Accra in 5–7 business days but is priced per pound. Ocean freight takes 28–35 days but costs a fraction of air for heavy or bulky shipments. If you're sending a full barrel of clothing and household goods, ocean almost always wins on price. If you need to get a laptop to a family member urgently, air is the right call.

Actual Weight vs. Dimensional Weight
For ocean freight, you typically pay by actual weight or a flat rate per barrel — whichever applies to your shipment type.
For air freight, dimensional weight often applies. This is a calculated weight based on the physical size of your package, not what it actually weighs on a scale. The formula carriers use:
Dimensional weight (lbs) = (Length × Width × Height in inches) ÷ 139
If your box measures 24" × 18" × 18", its dimensional weight is (24 × 18 × 18) ÷ 139 = roughly 56 lbs — regardless of what's actually inside. Carriers charge whichever is higher: actual weight or dimensional weight.
The practical takeaway: pack air freight shipments dense. A big, light box will cost you more than a smaller, heavier one.
Destination in Ghana
Tema Port is the entry point for ocean freight. Most consignees in Greater Accra can pick up directly, or you can add home delivery in Ghana as an optional service. If your consignee is in Kumasi, Takoradi, or another region, factor in domestic transport from Tema.
Kotoka International Airport (Accra) handles air freight. Customs clearance happens on-site before your consignee can collect.

Some goods attract higher customs handling fees based on how Ghana Customs Authority (GCA) classifies them. Barrels, boxes, and pallets are all priced differently. Barrels are the standard format for ocean freight and are costed by the barrel. Loose boxes go by weight or volume. Pallets are used for commercial or large-volume shipments and are typically quoted separately.

Ghana Customs Duties Duties are set by the Ghana Customs Authority, not by VoltaHaul. The rate depends on the item category, declared value, and quantity. Personal effects being shipped back home by a returning resident are treated differently than commercial goods. You are responsible for duties at the port — they are paid to GCA before your cargo is released. Read our Customs Guide for current duty rates and what documentation you need.
Home Delivery in Ghana We deliver to Tema Port. If your consignee wants door-to-door delivery within Ghana, that's an add-on service. Ask us at the time of booking if you want this included in your shipment plan.
Insurance for High-Value Items Standard shipments are handled with care, but if you're sending electronics, jewelry, or other high-value goods, we recommend declaring the value and adding cargo insurance. Ask about this when you get your quote.
Oversize Item Surcharges Items that exceed standard size or weight limits — large appliances, oversized furniture, vehicles — may carry surcharges. These are identified during the quote process, not after pickup.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I pay in Ghana cedis? No. All VoltaHaul invoices are priced and settled in US dollars (USD). Your consignee in Ghana pays any customs duties directly to GCA, which accepts both USD and cedis depending on the port.
Is there a minimum shipment size? For ocean freight, we accept shipments as small as one barrel. For air freight, there is a small minimum charge that effectively makes it economical starting around 5 lbs. Very small items (documents, single envelopes) are better sent via courier services like DHL.
What if my barrel is over the weight limit? Our barrels have a maximum weight of 300 lbs. If your barrel exceeds that, it may be held at the warehouse and you'll need to redistribute the load.
