The Best Way to Ship Clothes & Fabric to Ghana

June 17, 2026VoltaHaul Team

Clothing is, by far, the most common thing people send to Ghana — for family, for resale, for special occasions. It's light, it packs tightly, and it's exactly what ocean freight is built for. If you're sending clothes or fabric, here's how to do it cheaply and have it arrive in good condition.

Ocean Is Almost Always the Answer

For clothing, ocean freight wins on price nearly every time. Clothes are light relative to their bulk, so a barrel packed with garments stays at the low end of the weight scale while holding a remarkable amount. A single 55-gallon barrel can hold the wardrobe of an entire family.

  • Ocean barrel: from $80, 28–35 days — the right choice for any normal clothing shipment.
  • Air freight: from $2.75/lb, 5–7 days — only worth it for urgent special-occasion outfits or very small shipments.

See the trade-off in detail in our Ocean vs. Air Freight guide.

How to Pack Clothes So They Arrive Clean

A barrel travels for weeks at sea. Packing well keeps your clothes fresh and dry:

  1. Use a clean, dry, sealable barrel. Moisture is the enemy on a long ocean journey.
  2. Vacuum-bag or compress bulky items. Coats, blankets, and towels take far less space compressed — and you fit more in.
  3. Line the barrel with a large plastic bag for an extra moisture barrier.
  4. Add a few moisture absorbers (silica gel or similar) to fight humidity.
  5. Pack tightly so nothing shifts, but stay under the 300 lb barrel limit.
  6. Fold, don't cram delicate or special-occasion fabric — roll it to avoid hard creases.

Our full barrel packing guide covers the details.

Sending Fabric and Special-Occasion Clothing

Kente, wax prints, lace, and tailored outfits are popular sends — especially around weddings, funerals, and Christmas. For these:

  • Roll fabric rather than hard-folding to avoid permanent creases.
  • Keep special pieces in their own labeled bag inside the barrel.
  • For a single urgent outfit (a wedding next week), air freight may be worth the premium.

A Note on Commercial Quantities

Sending a barrel of family clothing is routine. Sending many barrels of new clothing for resale may be treated as a commercial import by Ghana Customs, which affects duties and documentation. Frequently Asked Questions

How many clothes fit in one barrel? A 55-gallon barrel comfortably holds clothing for a whole family — often several hundred garments when packed well and compressed.

Will my clothes smell or get damp at sea? Not if you pack dry, line the barrel with plastic, and add moisture absorbers. The long transit is exactly why these steps matter.

Can I mix clothes with other items? Yes — clothing is great for filling gaps around shoes, household goods, and gifts so nothing shifts. Just keep an accurate packing list.
