What You Can't Ship to Ghana: Prohibited & Restricted Items

June 12, 2026VoltaHaul Team

Packing a barrel for Ghana is mostly common sense — clothing, food, household goods, gifts. But a handful of items are either banned outright or tightly restricted, and including them can get your whole shipment held, fined, or seized at Tema Port. A few minutes of checking now saves a major headache later.

Always confirm the current list. Rules change, and this guide is a general overview, not legal advice. For the authoritative, up-to-date list, see our Prohibited Items page and the Ghana Customs Authority's published guidance.

Generally Prohibited Items

These are banned or very tightly controlled in most international shipping, and you should not put them in a barrel or box:

  • Hazardous and flammable materials — gas cylinders, fuel, aerosols, paints, solvents, fireworks
  • Explosives, weapons, and ammunition — firearms, gun parts, ammunition
  • Illegal drugs and narcotics
  • Counterfeit goods — fake branded products
  • Pornographic material
  • Live animals (these require entirely separate, specialised handling)

Restricted Items — Allowed With Conditions

These can often be shipped, but may need a permit, declaration, or special handling. Flag them when you book so we can advise:

  • Prescription medication — small personal quantities may be allowed with documentation; commercial quantities are restricted
  • Perishable food — dry and packaged food is fine; fresh/perishable items generally are not suitable for 28–35 day ocean transit
  • Electronics in commercial quantity — a personal laptop is routine; ten of them looks commercial and is treated differently
  • Alcohol and tobacco — restricted and duty-heavy; check before including
  • High-value goods — jewelry, large amounts of new electronics — declare the value and consider insurance

Why It Matters

Ghana Customs inspects incoming cargo. If a prohibited item is found in your barrel:

  • The item is seized
  • Your entire shipment can be delayed while the issue is resolved
  • You may face fines or additional clearance costs

Because most ocean shipments are consolidated into shared containers, a problem with one shipment can slow clearance for the container. Keeping your barrel clean keeps everyone moving — see how shared container shipping works.

A Simple Pre-Pack Checklist

Before you seal the barrel:

  1. No flammables, aerosols, or pressurised cans
  2. No weapons, ammunition, or anything weapon-adjacent
  3. No fresh/perishable food — dry goods only
  4. Medication and alcohol flagged and declared
  5. High-value items declared, and insured if appropriate
  6. An itemised packing list inside and a copy sent to us

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I ship food to Ghana? Dry and packaged food (rice, gari, canned goods, spices) is commonly shipped. Fresh or perishable food is not suitable for ocean transit and may be restricted.

Can I send medicine to family in Ghana? Small personal quantities of prescription medication may be allowed with documentation. Commercial quantities are restricted. Check before packing.

What happens if I accidentally include a restricted item? Contact us as soon as possible — before the container seals if you can. Catching it early is far cheaper than at the port.
